On July 5, 2021, Looris Tyson Nndongozi was shot and killed in Lowertown simply for being in the wrong place, at the wrong time. An outgoing student and football star, Tyson’s tragic death motivated his father, Jooris, to start a movement speaking out against gun violence and advocating for positive youth, children and families engagement in order to detour the growing gun and gang problems in Ottawa. His non-profit is named in his son’s memory: Tyson’s Dream. Jooris, whose family immigrated from Burundi, is working with many newcomer families to ensure they feel supported to openly discuss challenges they are seeing in their communities. He hopes that no other families will have to suffer the loss of child to senseless acts of gun violence.
